Apache River - noch heute ist es eine einsam gelegene kleine Stadt im riesigen Hochplateau Arizonas. Damals, als unsere Geschichte spielte, waren es nicht einmal zwanzig Häuser. Kaum mehr als hundert Menschen lebten in der vergessenen Kistenholzstadt.

Rigers Bar war das Zentrum der »Stadt«. Da trafen sich die Bürger und die Cowboys von den umliegenden Ranches.

Vielleicht hätte es sich trotz der Einsamkeit und Weltabgeschiedenheit in Apache River leben lassen, wenn Jimmy Honc nicht gewesen wäre. Ganze dreiundzwanzig Jahre war er alt, hatte ein glattes, bartloses Gesicht und harte Augen. Es hieß, daß er aus Kentucky gekommen wäre. Jedenfalls behauptete das Billy Coogan, der Lehrer, der in dem alten Scheunenbau die wenigen Kinder der Stadt unterrichtete. Coogan hatte ein paar Jahre in Kentucky gelebt und erkannte die Leute, die daher kamen, sofort an ihrer Aussprache, wie er sagte.

Jimmy Honc hatte nichts erklärt. Auch nicht, woher er kam und, was wichtiger für die Menschen in Apache River war, was er hier in der Stadt wollte.

»Er ist ein Revolvermann«, hatte Larry Beet in Rigers Bar erklärt. »Ich habe ein Auge für diese Leute!« Billy Coogan und Larry Beet hatten recht.
