Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Kunst - Bildhauerei, Skulptur, Plastik, Note: 1-, Universität zu Köln, 14 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Aufgrund des 200. Todestages Friedrich Schillers am 9. Mai wurde dieses Jahr 2005 als Schillerjahr deklariert. Neben den Feierlichkeiten in ganz Deutschland und vor allem in Weimar, erschienen zahlreiche Neuauflagen seiner Werke, sowie Monographien, die Schiller in einen aktuellen Zeitbezug stellen und die Aktualität des Dichters betonen. Auch das Fernsehen lieferte zahlreiche Beiträge zum Leben und Schaffen des Dichters. In vielen dieser Dokumentationen war ein Bildnis immer wieder zu sehen: das 1857 von Ernst Rietschel fertig gestellte Doppelstandbild von Schiller und seinem Dichterkollegen und Freund Goethe auf dem Weimarer Theatervorplatz. Neben der Schillerbüste von Dannecker und den Goethebüsten von Rauch und Schadow, ist Rietschels Doppelstandbild wohl die prominenteste Darstellung der beiden Dichter in der bildenden Kunst.

Schon kurz nach der Aufstellung der Plastik und der Aufsehen erregenden Enthüllungsfeier, wurde von einem Nationaldenkmal gesprochen. In der vorliegenden Seminararbeit soll vor allem der Frage nachgegangen werden, ob bzw. inwiefern es sich bei dem Goethe-Schiller-Denkmal um ein Nationaldenkmal handelt. Zunächst soll jedoch auf das Dichterdenkmal, seine Tradition und Bedeutung eingegangen werden. Im folgenden wird dann konkret auf die beiden bedeutendsten Einzeldarstellungen von Goethe- bzw. Schiller eingegangen. Im Hauptteil richtet sich der Fokus schließlich auf das Doppelstandbild Rietschels, bzw. auf die Entwürfe seines Lehrers Rauch, der den Auftrag zuerst erhielt und ihn dann an seinen Schüler abtrat. All dies ist in der Literatur gut dokumentiert und zeigt die Forderungen auf, die an das Werk von den verschiedenen Förderern gestellt wurden. Auch die Enthüllungsfeier, die zeitgenössische Kritik und die Wirkung des Denkmals auf die Nachwelt geben uns Aufschluss über die Bedeutung des Denkmals für die Nationalbewegung dieser Zeit. Was erwarteten die Zeitgenossen von den Denkmal und inwieweit entsprach es den Forderungen des Volkes? Schließlich soll untersucht werden, ob es sich bei dem Weimarer Doppelstandbildnis um ein Nationaldenkmal handelt oder was im 19. Jahrhundert unter einem Nationaldenkmal zu verstehen ist.
