Jahrhundert: Das Beispiel Mexikos, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Mexiko ist ein Land, das sich schon aufgrund seiner geographischen Lage in einer zwiespältigen Situation befindet. Nicht nur daß Mexiko unmittelbar an die USA angrenzt, im Krieg von 1846 bis 1848 verlor der Staat auch noch wesentliche Teile seines Territoriums (Texas, New-Mexiko, Arizona und Nordkalifornien) an den großen Bruder Nordamerika. Hinzu kommt, daß das 1821 zur Unabhängigkeit gelangte Mexiko vor allem von Diskontinuität sowohl auf wirtschaftlicher, als auch auf politischer Ebene geprägt wurde. Über dreißig Präsidenten regierten das Land von 1821 bis 1910, d.h. bis zum Ausbrechen der mexikanischen Revolution. In dieser Zeit erfuhr Mexiko eine Politik der Beschneidung durch wirtschaftliche und politische Eliten; es litt unter Einschränkungen der Meinungsfreiheit ebenso wie unter dem Ausverkauf nationaler Rohstoffe und der systematischen Herabwirtschaftung einer einstmals florierenden Handelsmacht. Kultur und somit auch Identität der indigenen Bevölkerung wurden gnadenlos ausgemerzt, so daß man ohne zu übertreiben feststellen kann:


„Die Begründung der mexikanischen Nation fußt auf der Zerstörung der Urbevölkerung.“1

Eine Suche nach dieser verschütteten Identität, auch in Abgrenzung zu Nordamerika und Europa wurde erst mit dem Ende der Revolution überhaupt in Betracht gezogen. Einen richtiggehenden „Boom“ der Identitätssuche erfährt Mexiko aber erst viel später. Vor allem auf literarischer Ebene findet die Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen, verschütteten Identität. Namhafte Schriftsteller wie Juan Rulfo oder Octavio Paz haben diesen Versuch einer mexikanischen Identitätskonstruktion schon in den 70er Jahren treffend beschrieben. Nichtsdestotrotz wird auch heute noch die mexikanische Literatur durch die Suche nach einer lateinamerikanischen Identität ausgezeichnet.
