„Mit Sozialisation wird zunächst der Prozess bezeichnet, in dem der nur mit rudimentären Instinkten geborene, aber für vielfältige Lernprozesse offene Mensch durch die allgemeinen sozialen, ökonomischen und kulturellen Verhältnisse wie durch spezielle Sozialisationsagenturen der jeweiligen Gesellschaft so geformt wird, dass er ihnen gemäße Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen entwickelt und schließlich als Erwachsener zum arbeitsteiligen Reproduktionsprozess seiner Gesellschaft beitragen kann. Im weiteren Sinne verstanden, schließt Sozialisation nicht mit dem Erreichen des Erwachsenenstatus ab, sondern umfasst auch die lebenslang immer wieder notwendig werdenden Formungs- und Lernprozesse, besonders beim Eintritt in neue soziale Institutionen (Betriebe, Parteien, Verbände usw.) oder beim Erreichen neuer Lebensabschnitte (z. B. Eheschließung, Pensionierung).“

Ein prägender gesellschaftlicher Unterschied ist immer noch die Zugehörigkeit zum männlichen oder zum weiblichen Geschlecht.
