Nicht zuletzt die in jüngster Verhangenheit erfolgreich lancierten Kinofilme „Das Schweigen der Lämmer“, „Hannibal“ und TV-Serien wie beispielsweise „Profilier“ und „Das FBI ermittelt“ haben zu einem wahren Boom des Phänomens „Profiling“ beigetragen. Der ermittelnde „Profiler“ wird in den populärwissenschaftlichen Beiträgen sehr häufig als eine Art Wahrsager dargestellt, welcher scheinbar mittels hellseherischer Eingebung aus minimalen Tatortspuren eine nahezu perfekte Rekonstruktion des Geschehens inklusive einer detaillierten Täterbeschreibung erstellen kann.

Doch was steckt hinter dem mystischen Schleier dieser hellseherisch anmutenden Ermittler? Welche konkreten Vorgehensweisen und Instrumente werden verwendet? Wie valid und reliabel sind die Methoden?

Diese Arbeit liefert zunächst einen historischen Abriss über die Entwicklung dieser noch jungen Disziplin.
Im weiteren Verlauf soll das Criminal Profiling definiert werden und ein Überblick über Ziele, Anwendungsgebiete, theoretische Prämissen und Aspekte wie das Tatortverhalten oder die Täterhandschrift gegeben werden.
