Im Nordwesten Europas gelegen, mit seinen 4,5 Millionen Einwohnern, führt Norwegen in der deutschen Öffentlichkeit nur ein Schattendasein. Da das skandinavische Land kein Mitglied der Europäischen Union ist, die Königsfamilie nur selten mit Skandalen auffällt und wohl auch sonst die Norweger eher zurückhaltende und bescheidene Zeitgenossen sind, kann man in den deutschen Medien nur selten eine Meldung über es vernehmen.
Im Auslandssemester von August 2003 bis Januar 2004 hatten wir nun die Möglichkeit Norwegen genauer kennen zu lernen. Bevor wir nun beginnen Deutsch als Fremdsprache in Norwegen zu skizzieren, erscheint es uns als nützlich, zunächst einen Blick auf den sprachlichkulturellen Kontext zu werfen: In Norwegen gibt es einige linguistische Besonderheiten, die letztlich auch auf das Erlernen einer Fremdsprache Auswirkungen haben. Im Gegensatz zu Deutschland, mit seinem Hochdeutsch, gibt es in Norwegen keine gesprochene Standardsprache. Alle Dialekte werden von staatlicher Seite gleichberechtigt behandelt und geschützt. Doch es handelt sich hier nicht nur um die Tolerierung von Dialekten, sondern es gilt sogar als ehrwürdig und angesehen Dialekt zu sprechen. Neben geschichtlichen Gründen, die Dialekte zu einem Teil der nationalen Kultur werden ließen, ist diese Wertschätzung auch auf die ländliche Struktur und die niedrige Bevölkerungsdichte des Landes zurückzuführen, die eine Angleichung der Dialekte an eine gesprochene Standardsprache ohnehin erschweren würde. Mit 323,180 km2 teilen sich die Norweger eine Fläche, annähernd so groß wie die der Bundesrepublik. Leben in Deutschland etwa 250 Menschen pro km2, so sind es in Norwegen nur 11, die, zudem häufig in, durch Berge, Seen und Fjorde, abgeschiedenen Gebieten wohnen. Das Prinzip der Gleichberechtigung lässt sich auch in einer weiteren Besonderheit wiedererkennen: Es gibt zwei geschriebene norwegische Sprachen.[...]
