Werke des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Autor selbst betrachtet sein Buch als „Zeitroman
im doppelten Sinne: einmal historisch [...] und weil die Zeit selbst sein Gegenstand
ist“.1 Doch die Zeit als Gegenstand des Romans bleibt keinesfalls reflektorisch,
von der Geschichte Hans Castorps isoliert, sondern wird von Mann mit der
Geschichte seines Helden vernetzt, so dass Zeit, Erzähle n und Reflektion stets
eine Einheit bilden. Reflektionen sind im ganzen Roman immer dort angesiedelt,
wo sich etwas am Wesen des Helden verändert. Die Synthese von Zeit, Erzählen
und Reflektion in Thomas Manns Roman und wie dies mit der Verzauberung des
Hans Castorp zusammenhängt zu zeigen, wird der Hauptaspekt meiner Arbeit
sein. Bevor ich jedoch mit der Analyse am Werk beginne, möchte ich noch einige
Überlegungen zur Zeit im Allgemeinen und zur Zeit in der Erzählliteratur
vorwegnehmen.
