Das Flammenmeer unter sich betrachtend beginnt er auf der Kithara zu spielen und das Feuer zu besingen. Der Monumentalfilm zog viele Millionen Zuschauer in seinen Bann, und Ustinov sollte für seine schauspielerische Leistung für den Oscar nominiert werden. Der Film ist eines der vielen Beispiele für den ikonischen Charakter des Bildes Neros als singender Kaiser. Kein anderes Ereignis der vierzehnjährigen Regentschaft Neros hat sich so sehr in das kollektive Gedächtnis der europäisch-abendländischen Zivilisation eingebrannt und zu Neros Platz in der Geschichte beigetragen, wie der Brand Roms im Sommer des Jahres 64 n. Chr. „This legend of Nero fiddling while Rome burned has taken on a life of its own over the centuries, acquiring proverbial status along the way.“

Die folgende Arbeit hat das Ziel, die verschiedenen Darstellungen und Analysen des Brandes und seiner Folgen sowohl bei antiken Autoren, als auch in der modernen Geschichtsforschung zu beleuchten. Dabei soll durch die Analyse der Maßnahmen Neros während und nach dem Brand eruiert werden, inwieweit die gegen den Kaiser erhobenen Anschuldigungen zutreffen und er tatsächlich – wie Cassius Dio behauptet – den Brand vom Dach seines Palast besungen hat , oder ob es Indizien gibt, die die Vorwürfe der Nachlässigkeit und Brandstiftung entkräften. Danach sollen die Reaktionen Neros auf den durch Gerüchte entstandenen innenpolitischen Druck untersucht und die Gründe ermittelt werden, warum die stadtrömischen Christen als Sündenböcke prädestiniert waren. Aufgrund der großen Komplexität des Themas und des eingeschränkten Rahmens, den diese Arbeit zur Verfügung hat, kann dieser letzte Punkt allerdings nur verkürzt behandelt werden.
