Diskussionsansätze findet man bereits in der Antike bei Platon und Aristoteles, die sich mit der Frage beschäftigten, welche Reaktionen dargestellte Gewalt beim Betrachter auslösen. Mit dem Einzug der neuen Medien wie Fernseher, Videorecorder, DVD-Player und PC in Privathaushalte entflammte die Diskussion erneut. Spätestens seit dem 26. April 2002, als der 19-jährige Robert Steinhäuser in seiner Schule in Erfurt erst 16 Menschen und dann sich selbst erschoss, erreichte die Debatte um Gewalt in den Medien einen neuen Höhepunkt. Während die einen von Kriminalisierung unserer Jugend durch Fernsehen und PC sprechen, negieren die anderen einen direkten Zusammenhang zwischen Aggressivität und medialer Gewalt. Es ist anzunehmen, dass das Fernsehen und der Computer für viele Jugendliche eine immer größere Rolle spielen, und dass sie sich aufgrund ihrer entwicklungsbedingten hohen Aufnahmefähigkeit schnell verleiten lassen. Gestützt wird diese Annahme durch den Fakt, dass gewaltreiche Medienangebote besonders von Jugendlichen konsumiert werden. Betrachtet man auch den Aspekt der Kriminalität, so lässt sich unschwer erkennen, dass besonders Jugendliche in dieser sensiblen Lebensphase ein hohes Maß an Straffälligkeit aufweisen. In der folgenden Arbeit möchte ich mich mit den verschiedenen Theorien zur Gewaltwirkung befassen. Dabei werde ich auf die Besonderheiten der jugendlichen Lebensphase aus entwicklungspsychologischer Sicht eingehen und auf die verschiedenen Motive selbst, die Jugendliche dazu bringen sich Gewaltfilme anzuschauen. Auf die einzelnen Bedeutungsebenen der verschiedenen Horrorfilmgenres möchte ich in diesem Rahmen jedoch nicht eingehen. Vielmehr soll neben den möglichen Wirkungsthesen die Faszination der Filmgewalt aus der Sicht der Jugendlichen erklärt und sowohl in den Rahmen ihres besonderen Entwicklungsprozesses als auch in die Frage nach dem sozialen Status eingeordnet werden.
