Lamarck naquit en Picardie, à Bazentin, près de Péronne, en août 1744. C'était le onzième enfant d'un gentilhomme campagnard, fort embarrassé d'assurer une carrière honorable à chacun des membres de sa nombreuse lignée, et qui fit élever celui-ci chez les Jésuites d'Amiens, dans l'espoir qu'il consentirait à embrasser l'état ecclésiastique, dernière ressource de tous les cadets de famille de cette époque; mais Lamarck n'avait aucun goût pour la cléricature. Son père étant mort, en 1760, il s'affranchit sur-le-champ du collège, et, sans autre viatique qu'une lettre de recommandation pour le colonel du régiment de Beaujolais, que lui avait remise une châtelaine, voisine de la seigneurie de Bazentin, il rejoignit, en Hanovre, l'armée du maréchal de Broglie, qui opérait alors, dans ce pays, contre le roi de Prusse, Frédéric II. Le colonel du régiment de Beaujolais hésitait beaucoup, paraît-il, à incorporer cet enfant de seize ans, d'une constitution chétive qui lui donnait une apparence plus juvénile encore; mais, dans une bataille, consécutive à l'arrivée de Lamarck à l'armée, le 16 juillet 1761, ce soldat volontaire se conduisit avec une bravoure et une fermeté telles qu'on le promut immédiatement officier.
