Das allein ist schon ein Grund diese näher zu betrachten und den Sinn und Zweck ihres Wirkens zu untersuchen. Dabei erhebt diese Arbeit keineswegs Anspruch auf Vollzähligkeit oder Alleingültigkeit, keines von beiden könnte sie gewährleisten, vor allem unter der Beachtung der heutzutage möglichen kurzfristigen Veränderungen. Allein bei der Lektüre der neuesten Zahlen könnten sich bereits 10 bis 20 weitere Institutionen eingeloggt und aufgebaut haben. Der Andrang ist enorm. Hingegen soll hiermit eine Beschreibung der derzeit gängigen Mittel und Methoden zur pädagogischen Nutzung des Internets erreicht werden. Zu nennen seien etwa verschiedene eLearning-Varianten, -formen und -methoden oder auch der Einsatz so genannter Teletutoren. Aber insbesondere soll sich diese Arbeit mit den Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten in und um Second Life auseinandersetzen. Angefangen wird hierbei mit einer expliziten Beschreibung und Definition über Sinn, Zweck, Ziel und Aufgaben der heutigen Weiterbildung. Besonderes Augenmerk soll dabei auch auf die Problematik mit informell Erlerntem und der Zertifizierung derartiger Kompetenzen gelegt werden. Folgen wird dem eine kurze Einführung in die Entstehungsgeschichte von Second Life, um danach eine detaillierte Beschreibung einzelner vorhandener Weiterbildungsinstitutionen im zweiten Leben sowie ihrer Vorgehensweisen und Ziele anzufügen. Die Einsatzmöglichkeiten der Weiterbildungsinstitutionen sind mannigfaltig, genau wie im realen Leben. Es ist egal, ob wir Sprachschulen suchen oder unsere kreativen Fähigkeiten ausbauen möchten.
