Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Amerikanistik - Komparatistik, Note: 1,3, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Fachbereich Angewandte Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften), Veranstaltung: Sin, Crime, and Guilt in the American Narrative Tradition, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im knappen Rahmen dieser Hausarbeit soll die 1998 im Lechner Verlag erschienene deutsche Übersetzung von Edgar Allan Poes 1842 zum ersten mal veröffentlichten Erzählung The Pit and the Pendulum untersucht werden. Im Mittelpunkt der Übersetzungsanalyse soll dabei die Diskussion um die angewandten Übersetzungsstrategien stehen. Vor der Besprechung dieser konkreten Übersetzung soll dem Leser im Kapitel Grundlagen der Übersetzungstheorie ein erster Einblick in die Theorie der literarischen Übersetzung ganz allgemein gewährt werden, wobei sich die Verfasserin in erster Linie auf Veröffentlichungen von Katharina Reiss und Hans J. Vermeer stützt (vgl. Literaturverzeichnis). Im Kapitel Poes Theorien zum tale soll Poes Gestaltungswille als Orientierungsgrundlage für die deutsche Übersetzung vorgestellt werden. Im Kapitel The Pit and the Pendulum sollen die Charakteristika der Erzählung besprochen werden, die für die Übersetzung relevant sind. Auf eine einleitende Nacherzählung wird weitgehend verzichtet, da davon ausgegangen wird, dass der Inhalt der besagten Erzählung dem Leser bekannt ist. Im Kapitel Übersetzungsstrategien wählt und hierarchisiert die Verfasserin, auf dem Inhalt der vorangegangenen Kapitel aufbauend, Aspekte, nach denen sie die Übersetzung anschließend untersucht. Das Schlusswort ist eine Gesamtwertung der Übersetzung, die sich aus den Ergebnissen des Kapitels Übersetzungsstrategien ergibt.
