Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt eine Auswahl der zahlreichen Papst- und Prälatenporträts Gian Lorenzo Berninis, die zwischen den Jahren 1617 und 1632 in Rom entstanden sind. Anhand der Bildnisse Pauls V., Gregor XV. und Urbans VIII. sollen typologische Veränderung in der Entwicklung des skulptierten Papstporträts aufgezeigt und die Genese eines in der Skulptur erstmalig auftretenden Typus erörtert werden. In der älteren Forschung war die Betrachtung der Papstbüsten Berninis vorwiegend von kennerschaftlichen Fragen bestimmt, wobei vor allem die Händescheidung und Datierung der Objekte im Vordergrund stand.

Durch die in der neuesten Forschung zum Thema erhobene These Zitzlspergers1 die Darstellung des Papstes in seinem Alltagsgewand, also mit Camauro und Mozzetta, sei ein öffentliches Bildnis im Sinne eines Staatsporträts2, kann das Papstbildnis über seine Porträtaufgabe hinaus als ein Medium der Vermittlung politischer Inhalte gelesen werden. Besonders die Büste Urbans VIII. wird hervorzuheben sein, da sich an ihr der Übergang zu einer neuen Darstellungsform exemplarisch nachvollziehen lässt. Diese „neue“ Repräsentation des Papstes ist hauptsächlich auf profane, rechtspolitische Inhalte ausgerichtet und ergibt sich aus der politischen Lage in der sich Urban VIII. in den Jahren des Dreißigjährigen Krieges wiederfand. Ein wichtiger Aspekt hinsichtlich der Interpretation der Porträtbüsten ist die Gewänderkunde, die Zitzelsberger für das skulptierte Papstporträt fruchtbar macht. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit wird in der vergleichenden Betrachtung des Porträts Urbans VIII. und des Kardinals Scipione Borghese liegen, wobei die von Zitzelsperger aufgestellte „Doppelporträt-These“ zu diskutieren sein wird. Eine Gegenüberstellung soll zeigen, dass die Porträts Urbans VIII. und Scipione Borgheses als komplementäre Werke zu verstehen sind und unterschiedliche, soziale Rollen widerspiegeln.
