Barreras, nel metodo inizia dall'uso della respirazione per controllare la mente ed abbassare il modo impulsivo di reagire al movimento, con la finalità di ritrovarsi in uno stato più sereno, meditativo e consapevole di come trattare il corpo e suoi muscoli nel movimento. È un programma di esercizi che si concentra sul rilassamento ed assestamento della postura, nella sua forma eretta naturale, per trasformarla in una posizione più evoluta e tecnica, iniziando necessariamente dagli elementi base della stabilità: appoggio/bacino/baricentro nelle linee d’asse, essenziali a fornire il giusto sostegno ed estensione della colonna vertebrale. Il metodo è indicato anche nel campo della rieducazione posturale. In particolare, gli esercizi del Metodo fanno acquisire la conoscenza necessaria e consapevolezza del respiro e dell'allineamento tra supporto, bacino e colonna vertebrale. Raggiungere detto assestamento e rilassamento, ci permette di estendere i muscoli del piano profondo del tronco, molto importanti per aiutare ad alleviare e prevenire mal di schiena. Con questo metodo d’assestamento e allineamento, si rinforzano tono muscolare, ma si rinforzano anche le fasce muscolari più profonde vicino alla colonna e intorno alla pelvi. Il punto cardinale del metodo è la tonificazione e il rinforzo dei gruppi muscolari specifici sviluppati nella danza classica, cioè di tutti quei muscoli connessi tra loro che iniziano dall’appoggio a terra fino al retto dell’addome: estensore proprio dell’alluce, soleo, zampa d’oca (retto interno o gracile, semitendinoso, sartorio), adduttori, pettineo, retto dell’addome e muscolatura della zona lombare. Gli esercizi devono essere eseguiti in modo rilassato e fluido, senza la presenza di un minimo sforzo, devono inoltre essere abbinati ad una corretta respirazione.
