Examensarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Filmwissenschaft, Note: 1,5, Technische Universität Dresden, 38 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Noch heute, über 75 Jahre später, assoziieren die Menschen in Indien mit dem Schlachtruf „Inquilab Zindabad – Lang lebe die Revolution!“ einen jungen Mann, der bereits im Alter von 23 Jahren von den Briten gehängt wurde, weil er im Kampf um die indische Unabhängigkeit 1928 einen britischen Polizisten erschossen hatte. Die Epoche zwischen den zwei Weltkriegen sah in Indien viele opferbereite Inder, die bereit waren, für ihr Land und dessen Unabhängigkeit zu sterben1. So wie eben auch im März des Jahres 1931 in Lahore, als Bhagat Singh zusammen mit Sukhdev und Rajguru, zwei weiteren Revolutionären, am Galgen starb.
Große Heldenerzählungen bilden dabei oft die Grundlage für die Ausbildung von Mythen und Legenden und so ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass viele Inder Bhagat Singh heute glorifizieren und ihm gern eine größere Rolle beimessen möchten, als er tatsächlich spielen konnte. Da er bereits im Alter von 23 Jahren als Märtyrer in die Geschichte des indischen Subkontinents einging, ranken sich auch heute noch allerlei Legenden und Verschwörungstheorien um die revolutionären Bestrebungen und schließlich die Hinrichtung dieses jungen Mannes. Es ist daher wohl nicht besonders überraschend, dass sich neben der Literatur, vor allem auch die indische Filmindustrie in der Interpretation und Darstellung eines so kurzen, aber ereignisreichen Lebens versucht hat.
Es gibt Elemente in den Filmen, die ein starkes Wiedererkennungspotential haben, sei es, weil sie Teil der indischen Geschichte sind oder weil sie besonders spektakulär erscheinen, die das Grundgerüst für den Mythos Bhagat Singh bilden. Besonders anschaulich und chronologisch erfolgt deren Darstellung im Hindifilm The Legend of Bhagat Singh von Rajkumar Santoshi, weswegen hier auch der Hauptschwerpunkt auf diesem Film liegen soll.
