Betrachtet werden die Mobilmachung, die Aufstellung der Streitkräfte sowie deren Gliederung, die geleisteten Vorbereitungen für den Krieg in den Nationen, sowie Probleme in der Kriegsführung.

Im Bereich der verwendeten Literatur finden sich Monographien, militärische Schriften aus dem Jahre 1915 und 1926 sowie Lexikonbeiträge wieder. Diese Vielfalt an verwendeten Schriften stellt sich dem Anspruch, einem Thema gerecht zu werden, über dessen genaue Fakten durchaus gestritten werden kann. So ist bis heute noch nicht gänzlich erforscht, wie viele tausend Mann auf beiden Seiten endgültig für ihr Land mobilisiert wurden und im Detail ausgestattet waren. Es wird hierbei versucht einen möglichst einheitlichen Überblick zu schaffen, der den Leser nicht verwirrt sondern ihm ein möglichst getreues Bild der Aufstellung der Streitkräfte der damaligen Zeit gibt.

Schlussendlich setzt sich diese Arbeit zum Ziel, die Unterschiede in der Kriegsführung an der Ost- und Westfront des Ersten Weltkrieges am Beispiel der beiden Nationen Russland und Frankreich aufzuzeigen.
