Der Schnee glitzerte an manchen Stellen wie grober Zucker, und doch lag schon ein Frühlingsahnen in der Luft. Gerade als die Turmuhr des Herrenhauses zu sechs dumpftönenden Schlägen ausholte, klangen die Glocken der kleinen Schloßkapelle, die ein wenig abseits des Gutes auf einer Anhöhe stand, melodisch in das dumpfe Getön. Hellklingend läuteten sie den Abend ein. Noch waren die Töne nicht verklungen, als eine Seitentür des Hauses geöffnet wurde und ein Mädchen hinaustrat. Entzückt blieben die blauen Augen an dem rotglühenden Sonnenball haften, der durch die kahlen Äste der Parkbäume hindurchleuchtete. Gleichzeitig vernahm das Ohr die Glockenklänge, und es war dem Mäd-chen wohl kaum bewußt, daß es die Hände über der Brust faltete wie in stillem Gebet.
