Die Technik und Entwicklungen der Serie werden als eine logische Folge unserer gegenwärtigen Wissenschaft dargestellt. Innerhalb einzelner Episoden werden Rückgriffe zu verschiedenen Wissenschaften noch deutlicher: als Grundlagen für technische Entwicklungen, als Grundelemente für Handlungen und Handlungselemente, als nachvollziehbar-realistische Komponenten in einer Welt, die die Zukunft der Gegenwart darstellen soll.
Diese Arbeit wird aufzeigen, dass es sich bei der Science-Fiction von Star Trek um eine Form von boundary work im Sinne Gieryns handelt: Die Grenzen der Wissenschaft werden im sozialen Spannungsfeld ständig neu verhandelt und festgelegt. Oder um Stephen Hawking zu zitieren: „Die Science Fiction von heute wird oft zu den wissenschaftlichen Fakten von morgen.“
Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt auf Plots und Handlungselementen liegen, in denen auf verschiedene Wissenschaften zurückgegriffen wird.
