Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Kunst - Installationen, Aktionskunst, 'moderne' Kunst, Note: 2,5, Universität Duisburg-Essen, 7 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Michael Buthe verbrachte zwischen 1970 und 1972 mehrere Monate in Marrakesch und Essaouira, bis er schließlich 1973 in der Altstadt von Marrakesch ein Haus erwarb um dort zu leben und zu arbeiten. Von nun an pendelte er beständig zwischen Köln und Marokko, unternahm von dort aus weitere Reisen, unter anderem in den Maghreb, den Nahen Osten und nach Persien. So wurden nach und nach die Fetische der afrikanischen Stammeskultur, der zoroastische Feuerkult Persiens und die Mystik der islamischen Dichtung Elemente seiner künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung. Dabei interessierten ihn archaische Gesellschaftsformen ebenso wie verschüttete Ausdrucksformen, die empfangenen Anregungen trug er zurück in die westlich zivilisierte Welt. Der größte Teil seines Schaffens war der intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit der westlichen und der östlichen Mystik gewidmet und verband diese beiden unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen von der Welt in seiner Kunst.
War er Ende der sechziger Jahre eher der puristischen und farbarmen Konzeptkunst und der Arte povera zugewandt, entwickelte er nach seinen Reisen in das nördliche Afrika eine Kunst, die sich durch opulente Farbigkeit, ornamentale Muster, bizarre Gegenstände, enigmatische Zeichen auszeichnet. Fremdartigkeit und Exotik wurden von nun an die unverwechselbare Handschrift Buthes.
Dabei hat er sich nie in die Grenzen der kunstimmanenten Dialoge eingefügt. Daraus ist etwas entstanden, was Stephan von Wiese1 „neue Welthaftigkeit“ und „Spiritualität“ in der Kunst genannt hat. Buthe transportierte durch seine Bilder- und Gedankenwelt den Kultus der Kunst in eine „heilige Kunst“, einer Kunst, die mit Symbolik, magischen Zeichen, Spuren, Relikten und Aktionsformen archaischer Gesellschaftsformen operiert. Diese „individuellen Mythologien“ sind als Gegenbilder zu einer immer mehr ökonomisch und durchrationalisierten Gesellschaft zu verstehen und verweisen so auf die Defizite des modernen Lebens.
