1. Einleitung
Die Metropole Paris ist immer wieder aufs neue faszinierend. Ob Reisende, Flaneure oder Künstler, die Diversität der Stadt zieht sie in den Bann und lässt sie nicht mehr los. Diese Faszination spiegelt sich ebenso in der Literatur wider. Auch in der französischen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts ist Paris zahlreich vertreten.
In der Epoche des Realismus bediente man sich verschiedener literarischer Techniken, um ein Abbild sozialer Milieus der Stadt und deren Charakteristiken und um eine „Analyse zwischenmenschlicher Aktion“ zu schaffen.1
Als Mittel der Beschreibung gilt in der Literatur die Sprache. Literatur kann zwar über die Sprache erlebt werden, doch muss sich diese gewisser Bedeutungen bedienen, welche in der Vorstellungskraft der Menschheit verankert sind. Diese Bedeutungen und auch Sinneserfahrungen, wie Töne, Farben und Gerüche könnten zwar direkt beschrieben werden, doch sind diese Bedeutungen in übergeordneten Begriffen des kulturellen Verständnis befestigt. Und diese übergeordneten mit Bedeutung gefüllten Begriffe können topologischen Eigenschaften zugeordnet werden. Mit Hilfe des realen Raumes und seinen Merkmalen kann demzufolge ein literarischer Raum erstellt werden. So werden dem Raum der Stadt bestimmte Bedeutungen zugeschrieben oder sie sind gar schon vorhanden, welche das Fundament der Erzählung signifizieren. Dabei ist die Struktur des Raumes genauso von Bedeutung, wie soziale und historische Hintergründe.
Diese Semantisierung eines Raumes, werde ich im folgenden anhand des Romans „le père Goriot“ darlegen, welcher 1834/35 in La Revue de Paris publiziert wurde und 1835 im Gesamtwerk La Comédie Humaine erschienen ist. Der Roman wird als „vollkommenste Aneignung der Stadt mit den Mitteln der Beschreibung und Imagination“2 beschrieben.
