In den letzten Tagen des Zweiten Weltkrieg schickten die Nationalsozialisten 24 Waggons mit Raubgold ungarischer Juden Richtung Westen. Der Großteil blieb bis heute verschwunden.

Mit 3. November 1944 datiert einer der Höhepunkte des ungarischen Holocaust. Der Ministerpräsident erlässt das Dekret Nummer 3840. Es bezeichnet alles jüdische Eigentum als "Eigentum der Nation, also Eigentum der Regierung" und öffnet Beschlagnahmungen Tür und Tor. Im Dezember soll das Raubgut in den Westen geschafftt werden, möglichst weit weg von der heranrückenden Roten Armee. Geladen sind Kisten mit Gold, Goldstaub, Eheringe, Diamanten, Silberbarren, silberne Kandelaber aus Haushalt und Synagoge, Münzen, Gemälde, Briefmarkensammlungen, Bücher, Uhren, Kameras, Violinen. So gut wie nichts davon hat seine rechtmäßigen Eigentümer je wieder erreicht. Zum einen, weil die meisten von ihnen - 600.000 ungarische Juden - ermordet worden sind, zum anderen, weil sich entlang der Route, die der Goldzug und seine Ladung über Ungarn, Österreich, Frankreich, Deutschland und die USA nahm, unzählige begehrliche Hände an dem Schatz bedienten.
